Regulation rim height is 10 feet, the same from elementary school gyms to the NBA. Kids don't need to start there: a lower rim builds proper shooting form, which is exactly what adjustable hoops are for. Raise the height gradually as strength and accuracy develop.

A good rule is a rim the child can hit with a normal shooting motion rather than a two-handed heave. For most young kids that means starting somewhere around 4 to 6 feet and moving up a notch each season. An adjustable basketball hoop makes that progression a knob turn instead of a new purchase.

Look at three components. The backboard should be a shatterproof material like PET rather than brittle plastic. The rim and poles should be steel with a rust-resistant coating if the hoop will see rain and snow. And the base should be thick, weather-resistant polyethylene, since a cracked base is the most common way outdoor hoops die.

An in-ground hoop is cemented into the ground, which gives maximum rigidity for aggressive play but requires permanent installation. A portable basketball hoop uses a weighted base filled with sand or water instead, so it sets up without tools or digging, moves on wheels, and can come inside or move house with you. For driveways, rentals, and growing kids, portable is usually the practical choice.

The hoop itself can, if it's built with weather-resistant materials. The one thing to manage in a Canadian winter is the base: water expands as it freezes and can crack the base from the inside, so either switch the fill to sand for the cold months or drain and store the hoop until spring.
